Our vision is to gather a community of individuals interested in or committed to competency-based theological education in order to:

  • share ideas, insights and best-practices,
  • explore theories, approaches and advancements, and
  • foster networking and collaboration.

The CBTE Cohort will participate in the full CBExchange Conference, gleaning from leading minds in CBE. The CBTE Cohort will meet twice a day for stimulating conversation on implementing and applying CBE concepts to theological education.

Are you interested in competency-based theological education (CBTE) but find yourself confused by unfamiliar terms, conflicting definitions and differing models? If you would benefit from an overview of concepts, delivery models and curriculum design, join us for a 1-day introduction. Through presentation and discussion, we will:

  • Outline the vision and underlying philosophy of CBTE, and how it translates into values and practices
  • Identify critical characteristics of CBE and unique emphases in CBTE
  • Discuss benefits of CBTE for students and institutions
  • Outline how CBTE changes your institution’s approach to curriculum development, structure, and instructional design
  • Introduce models of decentralized instruction and assessment, as well as mentor roles
  • Overview systemic considerations in the implementation of a CBTE program

ATS Scholarships

Staff and faculty of schools accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) who will be attending the CBTE Cohort at CBExchange 2023 are eligible to receive $500 off their registration, plus an additional credit towards their hotel if staying at the Omni Amelia Island Resort. To apply, please complete this scholarship form by Friday, June 16. Scholarship winners will be contacted by Friday, June 30, and will have till August 15 to claim their scholarship.
