8:30 am – 9:15 am | Breakout Session: Using CBE to Develop and Assess Leadership and Character in Graduate Education CBE has a strong record of success in preparing students with academic and technical skills. But does CBE offer the same promise for developing and assessing more complex leadership competencies, such as maturity, character, emotional intelligence, wisdom, or self-awareness? We think so. This session begins by telling the story of how a graduate program for clergy has implemented a competency-based approach to leadership formation and character education. At this session, you’ll learn a framework for assessing leadership competence. Using this framework, you’ll write leadership competencies that you can use in your context. |

1:45 pm -2:15 pm | Breakout Session: Creating a MAP (Mentor Assessed Path) for the Bible How do we present an ancient story so that it resonates with a 21st century audience? How do we teach content and method in a way that is academically rigorous and intentionally contextual? This session will explore the questions, challenges, and innovations of translating a “traditional” course-assessed Bible curriculum into a mentor-assessed program, one that centers integration outside of the classroom even as it immerses students in the Biblical Studies field, all with a commitment to inviting and amplifying Indigenous and other marginalized voices. Join us as we discuss how these questions and this commitment shaped our course design. |

8:40 am – 9:25 am | Breakout Session: Strategies for Assessing Character How do you measure the heart? While it’s impossible to do such measurement immediately, it is possible to observe behaviors, patterns, attitudes and relationships. In this practical session the group will zero in on how character assessment is different from other types. We’ll identify verbs for writing competencies for the affective domain. Together we’ll create a list of character-related artifacts. Finally, we’ll ponder the question of who is best qualified to assess character. Specific examples will be provided from schools doing competency-based theological education (CBTE) and the presenter’s semi-successful parenting life. |
